Blog Journal #4

My experience with online learning started when I was just a freshman here at Florida State University. My first class was a computer fluency class know as CGS2060. Here I learned not only the applications that a computer consisted of, but also the mechanical parts such as the CPU, RAM, motherboard, and more. This course was on the LMS known as Canvas with a asynchronous style where we could complete modules in any order desired and discuss freely amongst our instructor and peers. Although I believe it is easier to meet with educators in person, I find that online classes allow for all the information to be available at the click of a button. If you fall behind, it is easy to catch up because you aren't missing out on the lecture component. There are many benefits to both in-class and online courses, it just depends on preference!

OER's are known as pieces of work that are accessible to anyone, typically through online means. Because some pieces are protected under the copyright and fair use laws, it is important to have other resources to share and interpret information. An example is a website known as https://www.oercommons.org/. Here, educators can find resources that they can tailor to their own liking or use as is. One example I found was https://www.oercommons.org/courseware/lesson/60920/overview. As a psychology major, it is imperative that information is easily accessible so we can learn from others work when conducting research . This particular link discusses adolescent development through blogs.

In the newsletter design, I learned an immense amount of information on how to work Microsoft Word! Before, I was unaware of how to make a border and column of information on the same page. Now, I know how to carry out these functions, as well as use WordArt and input images. The task was tedious, but I enjoyed the task and felt as if it was a healthy challenge to expand my knowledge on MW. I think that next time I will make sure to use a bit more time when doing these types of assignments so I can make sure to absolutely perfect the work as opposed to rushing and getting it done quickly. This assignment was most helpful because if and when I become a teacher, I will be able to construct a newsletter to keep both parents and students in the know during the school year. Below you can find a screenshot of my work:

This week, I commented on Malyce's blog post and Hayley's blog post.

  1. Hi Edda. I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I agree that being to reach other people's work is important for teaching. I like the article you chose about OER. I also really liked your newsletter design. Your background was so creative and the thought clouds made it fun and easy to look at. I also learned so much about MS word while completing the newsletter design project.

  2. Erika, I really enjoyed reading your blog post! I also think that your Newsletter is extremely well done and creative. I love the background and how you incorporated a relevant quote! I see that you started online learning at Florida State. I got a bit of an early start in asynchronous online learning in high school, where I took a few extra classed offered by Florida Virtual School. As far as OERs go, I never knew there were so many amazing resources offered free of charge online to educators! I also visited www.oercommons.org and was amazed at the variety of incredible resources that I found.

  3. Loved your post and newsletter design! Very creative and well put together. I was particularly intrigued about the online class section. I didn't think about the aspect of everything being widely available at the click of a button as opposed to face to face. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Erika,
Your post was great! I have no taken CGS but I have had many friends that have. The graphics on your newsletter are awesome. You seemed to have learned a lot from that assignment. I actually completed my last 2 years of high school through Florida Virtual School Full Time so I am a big advocate for online learning. The time flexibility it offers and even learning at your own pace is so individualized. It creates a unique learning experience compared to a traditional classroom.

  5. Hi, Erika

You made a good point that there are many benefits to both in-class and online courses. But it not only depends on preference, but also depends on different situations! For instance, when you could attend face-to-face class because of time conflicts, you might want to consider online courses. What do you think?
