Just like any basis of comparison, a standard is necessary to understand what it considered acceptable. Technological standards are especially important to ensure both educators and students are kept up to date on the latest programs and pieces of technology. I have previously discussed the importance of balancing traditional values of education with modern ones. This belief is particularly directed towards the younger generation. When observing the ELA standards, I chose the kindergarten grade to explore. I was pleased to find that there were very minimal standards to uphold. Some of these standards included becoming familiar with the Paint feature on Microsoft, as well as learning how to use the Smartboard and work collaboratively with other peers. Implementing this would be extremely easy if I chose to teach kindergarteners because I have used the Smartboard before when I was in grade school. I also used paint programs. I believe that the standards for this grade level are a good balance of introduction to technology.

The iCPALMS tool that I would definitely consider using is the curriculum planner. This tool allows for educators to create lesson plans with ease. It even aligns with the standards of whatever subject you teach in. This is a great tool because creating a curriculum or lesson plan can be difficult at times, especially for new educators. I would use this to help create a basis for what academic goals I have in mind for my students and learn from it so I could perfect my own lesson plans.

One of the coolest Web 2.0 tools I've come across is Kahoot! I was first introduced to this tool in high school where my teachers would use it to quiz us on information we learned during a particular lesson. Not only does it have fun music to go along with it while waiting, but it also allows for all students to participate without shaming them for getting wrong answers! Educators, work places, and even parents can use previously designed sets or create their own. (https://kahoot.com/)

  1. Erika,

Great blog post! I to have been using Kahoot for a while now and it is a great online resource. It allows the classroom to stray away from lecture style and gets students more involved. I used to get annoyed when we did Kahoot's in class but often when I take an exam I will remember back to when we played and it helps me!

  2. Hi Erika,

I think Kahoot was a great example! I remember using Kahoot in high school and really hating it for some reason. As I have gotten older and began using it in some of my college classes, I began to see the benefits of it! I can definitely see myself using Kahoot as a teacher in the future!

  3. Hey Erika! I loved how you described the curriculum planner. I also love being organized and as a teacher that is something you have to do in order to stay on top of everything. Kahoot was huge at my high school and was a fun way for us to learn so I would use it in my future classroom as well. Keep up the great posts, I enjoy reading them.

  4. Hi Erika. I also chose to explore the tools used to Kindergarten! I agree that it was nice seeing very little standards at that age. I think the technology in the very young grades are more so for the teacher rather than the students. I do like the idea of having small children learn very basic technology with fun activities like Paint. I also chose to use the lesson planner. I think it would be so helpful for the teacher to be able to plan everything out according to the school's own calendar! Kahoot is such a good idea for the classroom. I still love playing the kahoot games. It gets everyone involved. I really enjoyed reading your blog!

  6. Hi Erika! I definitely agree that is is important to find a balanced middle ground that incorporates technology at a beginner's level for kindergarten aged students. I love that one of the standards is the Paint feature on Microsoft because it is so important for students to be introduced to technology in a creative way.
