As technology becomes more advanced, it is without question that those who have certain limitations will struggle. Some of these limitations can include age, mental disabilities, or other physical impairments. This is why the incorporation of assistive and adaptive technologies are imperative when catering to this particular group of individuals. These technologies allow for those who struggle with carrying out specific tasks to obtain assistance. However, these terms are not one in the same. Assistive technologies allows for more independence by giving individuals the ability to perform tasks they were unable or had difficulty in performing by adjusting and enhancing technology. Adaptive technologies are specifically manufactured for individuals with disabilities. Both of these allow for individuals to experience a positive lifestyle filled with inclusivity and ease. My grandmother has used hearing aids since I could remember. Other than that, I have never experienced others using these types of technologies. I believe that incorporating the technologies would be challenging in terms of cost. However I also believe that the benefits that the technology provide could outweigh the costs and provide a classroom that caters to all types of students.
The Universal Design provides a decent guideline in understanding the why, what, and how of learning through different means. Learning is an extremely complex process that requires flexibility and structure. I believe these are the most important components of learning because they provide guidelines to follow strictly while allowing for other types of information to flow fluidly. The key principles allow for us to form a strong foundation to build on and apply towards the larger issues at hand. Personally, I find that I incorporate the action/expression portion into my learning more often than the other two portions. After exploring the tabs, I can see how beneficial the work of all three components together can fuel effective learning.
Academic software, when used correctly, has many positive assets that can create a classroom environment with multiple opportunities. It is important to understand the amount of influence technology has on information access. Two academic softwares that I will most definitely include in my classroom will be Microsoft Word and the Wix website. Microsoft is extremely functional because of its multi-dimensional features. Whether it's writing a paper or trying to construct a test, the possibilities are endless. As for the Wix website, I never understood the benefits of constructing a website until I learned how to myself. This lesson allowed for me to appreciate the information constructed within the assignment, all while creating it aesthetically. My future students could benefit just as much as I did from these and gain knowledge that other students may lack in.
My experience with blogging has been great. This is my first time ever doing it and it has provided, in my opinion, a much better approach towards weekly assignments. I love being able to interact with my classmates and teacher despite not having in-class meetings. I've learned how to write out my thoughts in a manner that helps me think in different ways academically as opposed to being restricted to memorizing pointless facts and information.

Hi, Erika
ReplyDeleteYou made a good point that learning is an extremely complex process that requires flexibility and structure.
I agree that Microsoft Word and the Wix website are two important academic software tools.
